Dolores
The full Spanish name of the Dolores River was Rio de
Nuestra Senora de las Dolores, given by Father Escalante in
1776 and meaning "River of Our Lady of Sorrows." The
river winds through the town of Dolores and empties into
McPhee Reservoir, the second largest lake in Colorado. McPhee
is open for fishing, camping and boating. This area was once
home to the Anazasi and more than 1,380 ruins and other
archaeological sites were identified in the Dolores Project
area. The extensive collections from the excavations in the
reservoir are on display in the Anazasi Heritage Center.
Dolores is also the home of Galloping Goose #5. Both the Rio
Grande Southern Railroad Museum and The Visitors’ Center are
located in a replica of the Dolores Depot.
